*All averages are arithmetic means, except for E. Coli and/or Fecal Coliform, which are calculated as geometric means. For purposes of calculating a mean, values that exceed the measurement limit (e.g., <0.05, 60+, <33) are assumed to be 20% greater or less than their limit (e.g., 0.04, 72, 26.4).

Water Quality Standards

For 0.0% of the data records, Nitrate+Nitrite exceeded 10 mg/L. 10 mg/L represents the U.S. Public Health Service recommended limit of 10 mg/L NO3-N (nitrate-nitrogen) in drinking water.

For 41.7% of the data records, E. coli bacteria exceeded 235 CFU/100 ml. 235 CFU/100 ml represents Iowa's single sample maximum water quality standard for primary contact recreational use (Class A1), secondary contact recreational use (Class A2), and children's recreational use (A3).

  • 10/27/2015: An obvious impaired stream. I suspect the dairy operation just upstream of this site should be looked at. Low flow, drought conditions.
  • 08/25/2015: Holy eutrophic looking stream - obvious excess nutrient problem. Stream looked pea green. This stream has problems!
  • 09/03/2014: Green tint to water. Would be interesting to take Dissolved Oxygen at 5 AM, could be hypoxia
  • 11/06/2013: opaque color to the water. Record traffic (6 vehicles. Lots of people wanting to talk, one young Amish man trapping - taught him about a river
  • 05/01/2013: Guy on bulldozer literally pushing trees along the stream into the stream as I was sampling
  • 11/07/2012: Ther was some odd looking suspended material in the stream
  • 10/03/2012: Good evidence of excessive silt load in pool by bridge. This is unacceptable for the stream health!
